It was brought to our attention that someone is attempting to scam people via text messages using our name and logo. As you can imagine, this is concerning to say the least. We are doing everything we can to prevent this from happening in the future.
In an increasingly digital world, scammers are continually evolving their tactics to catch unsuspecting victims off guard. One of the latest tactics gaining traction is text message scams, or "smishing" (SMS phishing). These scams can take various forms but typically involve a fraudulent text message designed to trick you into revealing sensitive information or clicking on malicious links.
In this case, the scammer extended a job offer for a work-at-home job via text message to solicit personal information. Your trust and safety are our top priorities, and we want to assure you that we'll NEVER ask for your sensitive information via text message.
Protecting yourself from text scams is essential in today's digital age. Here are some tips to help you stay safe:
Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Messages: If you receive a text from an unknown number or sender, especially one you didn't expect, approach it with caution. Scammers often pose as legitimate entities.
Verify the Sender: Check the sender's information to see if it matches the official contact details of the organization they claim to represent. Be wary of minor discrepancies, like misspelled names or unofficial email addresses.
Don't Share Personal Information: Never share sensitive information, such as your Social Security number, bank account details, credit card information, or passwords, in response to a text message. Legitimate organizations won't ask for this via text.
Avoid Clicking on Links: Be cautious about clicking on links within text messages, especially if the message is unexpected. Hover over the link to preview the URL before clicking to ensure it matches the official website.
Double-Check the Website: If a message prompts you to visit a website, verify the website's legitimacy by manually typing the URL into your browser. Avoid clicking on links directly from the message.
Don't Respond to Suspicious Messages: Avoid responding to messages that seem suspicious. Responding or engaging with scammers may confirm that your number is active and lead to more scams.
Verify with Official Channels: If you're unsure about the legitimacy of a message, contact the organization directly using their official website or phone number. Do not use contact information provided in the suspicious message.
Use Mobile Security Apps: Consider installing reputable mobile security apps that can help detect and block scam messages.
Report Scams: If you receive a suspected scam message, report it to your mobile carrier and forward the message to the Anti-Phishing Working Group (reportphishing@apwg.org).
Educate Yourself and Others: Stay informed about the latest scam tactics and educate your friends and family about how to recognize and avoid text scams.
